The Weekend. June 27 - June 29.
A new bakery, a small bet during golf, and poolside key lime pie.
Good morning! How was your weekend?
Happy Pride to all who celebrated! I’m going to be honest, I actually leave the city every Pride weekend. My apartment is in the heart of the action, and things get a little... chaotic. Not in a bad way! Gay rights! But in a “barricades block my front door and I have to detour through the W4 subway station (and pay $2.90 just to cross the street)” kind of way. Plus, there’s garbage everywhere. That kind of out of hand.
So every year, I either go out of town with friends or head up to my parents' place in Westchester. This year, I went with the latter.
Friday
Started the day with a blowout—cockroach free this time!
Then I headed to Fort Greene for the grand opening of a new bakery. A baker I’ve followed for years, Saint Street Cakes, just opened her first location after running her business out of her apartment. The bakery was adorable. She did an amazing job, I was genuinely impressed. I left with one of each cookie: miso peanut butter, a vegan raspberry linzer, and a fresh out of the oven chocolate chip cookie. All were delicious.
After that, I walked the High Line to my pilates class, then grabbed dinner at Los Tacos. There’s a location on W 34th that’s always empty (rare). I’ve been coming here since college and it is consistently solid, which is wild to me.
Hopped on the 7 to Grand Central and caught a train to meet my parents in Port Chester for an evening showing of F1. My mom’s a huge fan of the sport, so it was fun to watch with someone so invested. The movie, directed by the same person who gave us the masterpiece that is, Top Gun: Maverick, really delivered that giant summer blockbuster feel. Highly recommend seeing it in theaters, the sound design was incredible. The seats literally shook when the cars sped by.
Saturday
Started the morning with bacon sandwiches, then leaned into Westchester life with a family tennis match. I wish I were better. My Russian tennis coach once told me, “You don’t like to run to the ball” and unfortunately, that still holds true. My footwork is just never quite there.
Then I hit some golf balls with my dad—an even bigger disaster. I started off hitting balls two feet into a bush, but by the end I was getting some air and hitting them about 60 feet. Fun fact: practice really does make a difference.
We practiced putting too, something I was consistently better at. I got overconfident and made a bet with my dad... which I very much lost. Thankfully, the loser just had to buy ice cream.
Later we stopped by a local farmstead and picked up a fresh cantaloupe. Truly a misunderstood fruit. It’s so refreshing with a great texture and flavor. Sure, it’s filler in fruit salads, but on its own, poolside? Underrated.
Had homemade pizza at my brother’s place, then we all hit up the local ice cream stand, King Kone.
Sunday
Watched Lando win the Austrian Grand Prix and made my parents avocado toast. I used to make it every day for my old boss, so I like to think of it as one of my specialties.
Later, we visited friends in Fairfield, CT. It was my first time there, and I loved it. Maybe it was the eating key lime pie poolside but I started to wonder, is it about getting a house in Connecticut? The town was so charming, right on the Sound, and there's a train station. Feels like an ideal weekend getaway.
Fell asleep in the car ride home, then took the train back into the city. Walked back from Grand Central. 5th was closed to cars once I got to 25th Street, so I got to stroll right down the middle of the street. Funny that everyone else stayed on the sidewalks while the entire street was open.
Let’s have a good week.
