Jerry Maguire is one of my all-time favorite films. I don’t think there was a more deserving Oscar nomination than Cameron Crowe for his incredible screenplay. Unfortunately, he lost that year to the Coen brothers, who took the award for Fargo.
This was not the last time that I was betrayed by the Coen brothers. Can’t forget when No Country for Old Men beat There Will Be Blood for both Best Picture and Best Director over Paul Thomas Anderson. I will never forgive the Academy for this. Yes, No Country is excellent, but what movie do we still talk about to this day? Thank you.
Anyway! I can’t think of a scene in Jerry Maguire that I don’t like, maybe the moment when Dorothy watches back her wedding video. That’s pretty brutal. But this final scene is so beautiful. I cry every time. The way Rod (played by Cuba Gooding Jr., who did win an Oscar that night) thanks Jerry: “You are my ambassador of quan, man”—it gets me every time. Because even though there are multiple relationships woven through the film, these two are the real center. It’s such a beautiful moment of male friendship, and such a great final acknowledgement of hard work.
Recently, I was served a clip online of Jerry’s speech to Dorothy, immediately followed by this scene. Two unforgettable moments from a fantastic movie. Can you believe they’re back to back?! Chaos!!
P.S. This film has permanently made me want to marry a sports agent—so if anyone knows one... please let me know.
